Terrible idea, and there is a reason this was all shelved and treatied away decades ago. An arms race in Earth orbit will only end catastrophically and will be guaranteed to create massive amounts of orbital litter, damaging astronomical research for decades or even far longer, and also severely complicating all future space launches. Enough orbital debris and we could be planet-bound for generations or even far longer.

Yeah, even tiny screws (hell, especially tiny screws) can fuck up orbital launches and keep us trapped on earth. It's one of the top cited theories as to why some scientists don't think we will escape earth to colonize the stars. We will find a solution eventually to clearing said debris, we are humans after all, inventing solutions for problems, especially ones of our own making, is our forte. But yeah, that colony on Mars timetable would need to be 'indefinitely postponed' if our orbit becomes full of trash.

I remember an anime being made about that. I always wanted to watch it, about astronauts working as janitors to clean up orbiting space debris.

We don't deserve to colonize the stars. We haven't even proved we can manage a single planet. We have a lot of growing up to do before we start polluting the galaxy.

That's just my opinion. And my further opinion is that if other alien races are doing that, even more reason to just stay at home.

I got a solution: A giant magnet with a single-use chemical propellant on it. Or even better a series on smaller magnets built the same. Send them into orbit to do laps around the earth, picking up all metallic space debris. when the magnet is full, shoot it out of orbit and on its way out of the solar system. Or send them crashing into Mars into the same place so we have a junkyard of parts and scrap metal waiting for us there.

One of the sources, a Yemeni, said the militia group also said they would not attack Israeli ships or any commercial vessels, except those belonging to Saudi Arabia.
