The Pentagon announced that the execution by firing squad of Palestinian-origin terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan, who carried out a shooting spree at Fort Hood base in Texas, will be livestreamed. This comes after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated yesterday that the execution will take place on December 3, saying that "we will make sure people can watch this, and that the event will be public." Hasan, a psychiatrist who served in the U.S. Army, went on a killing spree in 2009 in which he shot and killed 13 people at Fort Hood base in Texas.

I remember when that happened. I know death row in America has a 100 appeals but I can't believe he hasn't been executed yet.

Hell, this evil broad who just had her execution botched in Tennessee is 50 years old. She committed this crime when she was 18. It's ridiculous. She should have been dead 30 years ago.

100% agreed. I understand the sentiment, but this is not who we are. And this will set a bad precedent. Future captured Americans will now be executed on camera in retaliation for this.
We can hope that there is a good chance this idea will die quietly. I think that is likely.

I am not sure I 100% agree. Yes, it does set precedent where captured Americans can be subject to the same treatment and humilation, but not by Muslim nations. They already were doing this in Iraq.
My observation of Arab concept of 'honor' and shame is that it is not that dissimillar from the Japanese. Being taken alive and executed in a spectacle is a humiliation. Seeing the US do the same is a brick shitting moment for them. They would now know that there are bigger humilations to fear than rotting in Gitmo.
Now, an American captured by hypothetical communist rebels in a Latin American country? Or American soldiers captured in a hypothetical war with Russia? Completely different story.
He would become a martyr for the socialists. He is already a martyr for Islamist lunatics, publicly executing him just means they get an oh shit moment of what might also happen if they attempt something similar.
They will then respond to that humiliation with revenge. As I said, there will be future Americans who will now suffer because of this choice. People will be abducted specifically to fill this role.
I do not believe there is any deterrent factor whatsoever. These people seek death and they seem to be remembered. We are doing their work for them. No, the best thing to do with them is exactly what happened to Dzhokhar. Life in ADX, with occasional stories released about how terrible the conditions are there, will be a far better deterrent. Rotting in Gitmo is equally as bad. There is no way that is a preferred fate to public martyrdom.
I vigorously and strongly - nay, I aggressively disagree with this public execution. This is a terrible idea with no upside. I do not believe there will be even a tiny deterrent effect. There are only negatives for us if we go down this path. And needless suffering will be inflicted on innocent Americans because of it.
And, as was stated previously, this is simply not who we are. America is not a nation that makes public spectacles of executions. We are a nation of laws, not vengeance.
