Triple M Junkie Idol Game thread

Warrior felt like it was almost too obvious so I avoided it. Stupidly it turns out.

Whoever said on mine "the writer isn't sure if it's good or bad technique" nailed it lol. I genuinely wasn't sure.

For 2026, terrible. For 1987, when it came out, that was wizardry. So I split the middle and called it "amatuer MMA" which is really kinda what it reminded me of.

I'll happily take the fourth place finish, middle of the road in the early rounds is the sweet spot!

Brick was far too narrow in his criteria, in my opinion. Nothing in the description of the category said anything about modern MMA, or even what type of MMA at all. Bartitsu was absolutely a Mixed Martial Art, and was pretty advanced for its time.

Doyle's depiction in his books was a very accurate description of Bartitsu, which is, by definition, a Mixed Martial Art. Nothing in the category description said this had to include chokes or armbars.

@goodcat1337 for your most excellent judging in this round, I will not mention your ....previous judging again.
I think Brick was consistent and accurate. He was using the "is it art or porn" standard (you know it when you see it), and I don't have a problem with that because that's the whole point of the category.

Plus, his critique of that particular scene isn't wrong imo, it's too clean and pretty and choreographed. It'd be like using a Steven Seagal Aikido scene. Sure, you can argue it's Mixed Martial Arts, but those are not how real fights go. So even though Baritsu is real, like Aikido, the depiction of it in that scene did not land as realistic.

(In the BOOKS?!? SIR. This was about the movies/shows.)

I should have worded that a bit better. What I was getting at is that the movie was a very accurate replication of what was in the books which was an accurate description of Bartitsu. I stand by my entry. Clinching, boxing, elbow strikes, wing chun, karate....it was all there

That was mine but you stole it by 19 minutes lol.

I had the perfect explanation in my head of the technique before anyone really knew what Bjj was in 87, but Rorion Gracie was fight coordinator on that movie so the execution of the move was decently realistic. He went for the arm bar and missed it cuz of the rain then slipped in the triangle. The only slight quibble I had of the move was he didn’t pull the head down to choke him out, but when I used to drill triangles, my coach always said by the time you pull the head the choke should be really on if you tightly pin their shoulders. I used to tap them without pulling on the head and pinching their shoulder into the throat, but rolling juijitsu in sparring I wasent good at triangles as I wasent flexible enough.

Warrior says boxing genre. That’s just fucking wrong lol

Sure, but the execution in the movie made it unrealistic. Fights just don't look like that irl.

Plus, the whole "slow down time and talk through the entire sequence" flies in the face of combat sport in general. Great for Hollywood, but the whole POINT of all that training is to move beyond conscious thought and have your body react to your opponents actions.

Your underlying points aren't wrong at all, it's just that specific scene isn't a great example imo.

Not related to the category so much, but I recently learned that in some BJJ comps, pulling down on the head to finish a triangle can be considered like a neck crank and can be illegal.

I found that absolutely wild. But then again I've seen rule sets where they let brand new white belts kneebar, but not do wristlocks. Figure that out.

@thedarkwingduck2k11 do you want me to lock that other thread? Or just move posts over here if there are comments?

That’s crazy. I know heel hooks are banned too in some competitions. We stopped drilling them in training cuz drilling other leg locks like the Achilles ankle lock, kneebar its painful enough to tap, but with the heel hook they ask is it on? No! Is it on now? No, then pop! Your knee and ankles popped.

Over here in some amateur and semi pro mma fights, ground and pound to the face is illegal. So, you can punch them in the face standing, kick/knee them in the face, but if you drop them and go for the finish you can only punch the body, wtf!

That's wild, GnP is such a key component of MMA to just take it away like that is... I don't get it.

In my opinion, this is not the criteria. It did not say anything about realistic fights. It said an accurate depiction. An accurate depiction need not be entirely realistic, it need only be accurate.
