Triple M Junkie Idol Game thread

In my opinion, this is not the criteria. It did not say anything about realistic fights. It said an accurate depiction. An accurate depiction need not be entirely realistic, it need only be accurate.
You're splitting hairs. If it's unrealistic, the accuracy of it is certainly debatable.

And regardless, unless your claim is that an accurate depiction of Baritsu is a dude standing there for 30 seconds, while mentally narrating what he's going to do, that clip still falls short.

Because that is not an accurate depiction of martial arts, particularly a combat one.

This is all splitting hairs. Isn't that what we all do here? We just have different interpretations of the criteria. I am taking it literally, word for word.
Well, then you're kinda painting yourself into a corner with this one, because accuracy and realism go hand in hand here.

The only martial arts that someone claim are "accurately portrayed" but unrealistic are bullshido martial arts (again, aikido or those weird ass empty hand/energy manipulation ones). An accurate portrayal of an actually effective martial would also NEED to be realistic.

I don't really feel like going back and forth on this, I'm trying to just agree to disagree. So this is the last I will say.

If a criteria were "give an accurate depiction of Kenpo karate based on technique", you could present a video of someone doing a solo kata, back and forth, and it would in fact be an accurate depiction of Kenpo Karate. Nothing in the criteria says a "realistic portrayal of a fight".

Let's just agree to disagree. This doesn't have to be a Whitesnake.

Brick was far too narrow in his criteria, in my opinion. Nothing in the description of the category said anything about modern MMA, or even what type of MMA at all. Bartitsu was absolutely a Mixed Martial Art, and was pretty advanced for its time.

Doyle's depiction in his books was a very accurate description of Bartitsu, which is, by definition, a Mixed Martial Art. Nothing in the category description said this had to include chokes or armbars.

@goodcat1337 for your most excellent judging in this round, I will not mention your ....previous judging again.
yeah brick got a bad beat on poker the night before and showed me, how fun this game is.
I also want to thank YOU @Eranys
specifically to force me to enter this amazing game 🤣

That's going to be an issue for FHB. Very distinctive typing habits due to the language.
no, i have always been like that 🤣
The challenge is to show a clip.
Well i did that.. now i have to tell you something about the clip... YOU CAN FUCKING WATCH IT YOURSELF!
so.. that's why my book reviews and shit in school always got bad grades.
Just wrote it as it is, with the least amount of effort.
I try to do better next round.
But... according to Brick UFC is not an MMA Organisation
i was not aware of that.
Is that why he doesn't watch it anymore?
All those 1 round finishes aren't even MMA!

And if he goes all in and the opponent folds.. was that even Poker?

Have you actually ever lived, if you weren't last place in Junkie Idol?
No you didn't you assholes! 😜

Haywire-Hotel Room Fight

The scene is from Haywire, the action thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh. The scene features real life MMA (retired) star Gina Carano making her film debut fighting against Michael Fassbender. This scene is known for its realistic depiction of fighting and various uses of fighting styles, better known as Mixed Martial Arts.
Let's break it down. 47 secs in, Fassbender goes for a RNC palm 2 palm style. At 1:03, he tries it again, but is unsuccessful. At 1:17, Gina hits a beautiful judo hip toss and at 1:34 she goes for an arm in guillotine. From there Gina transitions into some good body shots, followed by a solid knee to the ribs, and a very technical leg kick, transitions to a wrist lock, to a front kick to a standard muay thai fighting stance followed by another front kick.

After a crash into the bedroom, Fassbender goes for a double leg and picks her up for a slam, which Gina transitions into a beautiful triangle choke. Fassbender even tries to tap, but Gina isn’t having it. After they fall to the ground, Gina gets full mount and ends the fight with some solid GNP and a gun blast to the face.

As you can see, this scene features a plethora of MMA styles, BJJ, Muay Thai, Judo, Aikido, Wrestling, Kickboxing and at the very end, Thug-jitsu. This scene definitely has the most accurate depiction of MMA technique on film.
cmvideo75: Nice. Gina kicking ass is always welcome. And of course she is going to have excellent MMA technique. Lots on display here from both fighters. No music bonus. And IMDB was borderline.... they have this listed as GunFu lol. Technically that is not 'martial arts' so I guess the bonus applies here. 9 score + 2 IMDB + 0 Music = 11 total
webble:
surprisingly I haven’t seen this film, I looked up the genre in order to perform my judging correctly, wtf is Gun Fu??? The write up for this entry was good and pretty much saved me too much thinking because it did it for me. I’m not sure how accurate it is in that Gina wouldn’t really beat a manas strength does come into play but it ticked a lot of boxes technique wise so I will give it a 7 plus 2 points for gunfu total 9 points
Goodcat:
Man, this movie is so terrible. They barely let Gina talk at all, and when she did, they overdubbed her voice cause she was so bad. But that has nothing to do with this clip, which fits all the MMA criteria and shows off her real life skills big time. Not a whole lot to say on this one, it's pretty self explanatory. I like the Gun Fu tag on imdb as well. And you get the +2. 8 actual and 10 with the +2
Brick: Ah, Haywire. The infamous movie where Gina was so bad they had to have another actress redub every single one of her lines in post-production. But I digress, that’s not what we are judging here. Regarding the fight scene; didn’t hate it, didn’t love it. Technique was on, but as you’d expect since Gina was there and could call out any total bullshit. But still a bit 70s-Kung-Fu movies in certain spots with all the perfect blocks and rapid-fire exchanges, which you don’t see in real MMA. We’ll go 6.5/10 for the fight itself, and looks like you get the +2 for no MMA tag, but nothing for music, so 8.5/10.

Lethal Weapon- the end of Riggs vs. Mr. Joshua
So we're clear, we're not talking the whole scene. It starts as a fairly typical, exaggerated Hollywood fight scene, but as soon as Riggs stops getting drowned in the puddle, it goes full MMA, which is what we're talking about.

It's all how real MMA (not necessarily high level, but real) would go: Riggs comes up into tech mount, goes for an armbar (questionable at best fight IQ, it's raining and the opponent is soaking wet and slippery), and gets reversed. Mr. Joshua is now in Riggs' guard, begins aggressively attacking. We now see Riggs take a punch, grab and control the wrist, stuff the hand, and lock up a textbook(ish) triangle choke for the finish.

You can find a sequence like that on any amateur MMA card you go to, almost guaranteed.
cmvideo75: Oh man... the bonuses help out this one a good deal. The fight itself was just ok... it was short and showed 2 submission attempts. But I did like how the clip queued right up to the exact point in the fight that the contestant mentioned. And there is a good breakdown of the techniques in the clip in the write up. 8 score + 2 IMDB + 2 Music + 12 total
webble:
I’m not sure if this was submitted as an example of mma technique or lack of mma technique, it kind of combined the two – like they tried but failed to mma. I’m not entirely sure if the writer is sure either. I love the fact that the imdb genre tags include holiday, but crucially not mma so 2 points for that plus 7 points for the submission 9 points total
Goodcat:
I was prepared to kill this one, but it surprisingly did have some good MMA techniques in there at the end. So definitely kudos on finding that one. I like the one dude yelling out "break his fucking neck!" while he has the triangle choke locked in. Which, I guess with enough force you could potentially do that, but it's obviously not what that maneuver is for. But, good clip and you get the 2 extra points as well. 7 actual and 9 with the bonus
Brick: Well, good thing you clarified and clipped it down to just the “MMA” part at the end, because the entire fight was Hollywood wacky. This entry was middle of the road; a few MMA techniques but that was it. Putting it just below the also-quick “landman” fight just because that one seemed a bit more realistic. 7 points for the fight, +2 for no MMA tag, but nothing for bad music. Total 9/10.

Wheels on Meals-Jackie Chan vs Benny Urquidez

No idea if it has any tags or music.. laying in the bed and can't sleep 🤣

Some reasons that speak against this pick:
Obiviously the reaction to any strike is just wrong, but it's Jackie Chan.
Also there are some cuts, that are unnecessary in my eyes, because (shifting into the plus side of this entry)
Benny is a realy fucking fighter and you see it in every second.
There are some movie moves, but his technique is perfect and Jackie does do well.
As opposed to Hollywood who would pick an idiotic actor for that role and cut the face in each scene to get a double in, Jacky (or the producer) knew, that a fighter from the get go is so much smarter.
I thank the judges for the highest points in advance... 😜
cmvideo75: Not a great entry here. Just about every Jackie Chan movie is going to be listed as Martial Arts on IMDB. And the category was 'the most accurate' depiction of MMA. An over the top karate movie fight is not very accurate to real life. It shows some crazy technique but it would never go down in a real fight anything like this. So if we are looking for realism and accuracy here, this isn't it for me. 5 score + 0 IMDB + 0 Music - 5 total
webble:
dear writer yes this has tags, the tags include martial arts so no points there. There is no soundtrack just fyi but there is music which kicks in half way through and actually really does add to it so I am giving 2 points for that. The writer came at this with an interesting technique starting by explaining why his choice was a bad one, if you cant sell your chocie then I am not going to, luckily for you it kind of sells itself and is a grower. It has the various techniques you would expect and unlike the writer I like that there was some damage. I don’t know how to score this the clip and write up don’t go together overall I think 8 points plus 2 for the music total 10 points
Goodcat:
I don't think this is a bad submission overall. There are definitely some MMA type aspects in it, namely the dude locking up a Thai clinch and throwing a knee when they're up against the dinner table. But the rest of it feels much more like just a regular martial arts movie scene rather than using MMA in a movie. But it does still kind of fall in the same category as Sherlock and Gangs Of NY where MMA in its current form didn't exit. And you missed the +2 for the tag, but I actually did think the music added to the fight, even though it was a total rip off of Beat It. 6 actual but 8 with +2 for music
Brick: If you think this is an accurate depiction of MMA, then you have apparently never seen an MMA fight in your life. Certainly entertaining, but in that non-realistic, silly, over-the-top style we like in this type of movie. Unfortunately for you, you seem to have misread this challenge entirely and submitted just about the least accurate depiction of a fight possible. The dude was stretching/dancing in the middle of the fight, FFS. He escaped a choke hold (if you could even call it that) by tickling the guy. And I don’t even know WTF was supposed to be going on during that final minute or so. Yikes. About as accurate as the Sherlock Holmes and Total Recall entries, so we’ll go with 1.5/10. No bonus because there is a martial arts tag, and no bonus for music, so 1.5/10 is what you get.

Me thinks me need to read the rules a little more thoroughly.

Welcome to the first installment of Triple M, a new Junkie Idol series that features MMA, Movies, and Music topics. For those new to the Junkie games, any category relevant to these topics will be fair game. Each round I will present a category, and you will private message me your submission relevant to that category, usually in the form of a video clip and a write up. I will gather all the submissions and present it to the judges without any identifications. Judges will score the submissions on a scale of 10.

This year elimination system will be different from past seasons. We will have 3 preliminary rounds to determine the top 8 players to advance to the quarterfinals. The top 8 will be ranked and seeded based on their performances in the prelims. They will be matched up head to head 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5, until we end up with the 2 finalists.
